There are three in Dictionary of SA Biography (all were born in Scotland):

Peter Cormac SUTHERLAND 1822 - 1900 (Vol. 1) Natal surveyor. x 1857 Rebecca
Urquart Leask; 1 son, 1 daughter. xx Jane Garden Blaikie; 2 sons, 2
daughters.

Henry SUTHERLAND (1790 - 1879) (Vol. 2) Minister of the NG Church. x 1825
Clara Elisabeth Aling; 1 son, who died a bachelor. xx Maria Catharina Louw
widow of Arnoldus C. Vlok and Jacobus W.A. Nel. xxx Anna Maria Margaretha
McLachlan. The town of Sutherland is named after him.

John SUTHERLAND (1792 - 1848) (Vol. 2) Eccentric, author, and land owner. Had
four sons and three daughters by Ushrut, a Hindu woman "whom he treated as his
wife". The first son was named John, the third, Erick. John S. owned much of
what is now Knysna.

Also, in the SA Archives there are many references to Sutherland. You can
filter out the Death Notices, wills and estates by searching on

Sutherland AND
MOOC

go to

http://www.national.archives.gov.za/naairs.htm

choose RSA or KAB as the database

Let me know if you need help with this.

Best wishes
Keith
