Brian,
The details may be in here: (This is 1894, which matches your date. It may,
or may not, be the document you have already found.)
DEPOT KAB
SOURCE MOOC
VOLUME_NO 6/9/327
REFERENCE 768
DESCRIPTION GARDEN, WILLIAM MONROE. DEATH NOTICE.
STARTING 18940000
ENDING 18940000
May be. I had occasion to be looking for one Jan Louw. Many of this name
were prisoners who died on Robben Island. The Death Notices were very sparse:
everything about family was "unknown". Poor souls.

Does anyone on the list perhaps know what Robben Island was being used for in
1894. I am trying to find out for an email friend in Canada something about
the
death of William Munro GARDEN, born 12 Jan 1855, died 7 Apr 1894. The fact
that
he died on Robben Island appears on his gravestone in Scotland. In the 1881
census he was shown as being a commercial clerk (tea) so I presume me was in
SA
on business or passing through to or from the east. There is no record of his
death in NAAIRS. There is however a death of William Monroe Garden but that
was
in 1892, I have checked the statement by the magistrate in the CT Archives.
The
info is minimal saying he was a bagmaker and was a mental patient with no
known
relatives and there was no death notice. There is a chance of him being the
same
person so that is why I would like to know what was happening on Robben
Island
in 1894.
Thanks for any help
