I am amazed: If you go to

http://used.addall.com/Used/

and search for the keywords

standard bank south africa

you will find at least three histories of the bank. You don't have to buy
them, you know what to look for.

Best wishes
Keith

Could it be The African Banking Corporation? I have never heard of the
Bank of Africa, but the African Banking Corporation had its head office in
Cape Town at the relevant time. It subsequently merged with the Standard
Bank of South Africa Limited (I think in the 1920s when there were numerous
bank mergers in many countries, including Australia); this is the origin of
the name "ABC Branch" used for Standard Bank Branches in many cities. The
one in Cape Town is, or was when I last looked, next door to the Reserve
Bank in St George's Street.

If it was the ABC, the Standard Bank might be a source of information about
so exalted a staff member as a general manager. Indeed, there might well
be a corporate history to be found in a library somewhere.
