Hi list members
Does anyone here have connections to the following?
Arthur Dudley Ward SMITH from Preston, Kent, England. Arrived at the Cape
in 1893 from India. Was married to Lucy HOLDEN, from London, in 1893. They
had 6 children.
Charles Beaumont SMITH born 1875 at the Cape, died 1907, Bishop in
Auckland, England (?). Married 1905 in Sunderland to E. Mildred HARRISON
and their first child was Charlotte born in 1906.
Charles was the son of Charles Thomas SMITH born 1824 (son of Judge SMITH
of Cape Town), died 1901 in Cape Town. Married 1872 in Grahamstown to Julia
Emily GREATHEAD (daughter of James Henry GREATHEAD).
Florence May SMITH born 1893, died 1949, daughter of James Charles SMITH
and Florence May CORBETT. Married Vivian Neville DAWSON (born 1882) and had
2 children: Rhoda Phyllis and Gilbert Neville.
I'm trying to connect my SMITH line and these couples may be related.
My line is:
Charlotte Hilda SWART born 20 August 1906 in the Cape. She was the second
wife of Charles William SMITH (born 15 January 1899 in the Cape or UK), they
married on 27 February 1932 at St. John's Church in Cape Town. They had 3
children: Elaine Mary (born 28 March 1934 in Cape Town, died 05 Nov 1999 in
Randpark Ridge), Vivion Dudley (born 05 April 1936) and Roland Edgar (born
15 Dec 1938/9). The family moved to Wellington, Cape circa 1940s. They later
moved to 28 Maxwell Street, Ophirton, Johannesburg and then to St. George's
Road in Bellevue East, Johannesburg. Charles William SMITH was a shoemaker /
foreman at shoe factories. Charles had 2 children from his first marriage
William (has a daughter Carmel, and a son James). Charles had a brother
Thomas(?) who is said to have been a councillor in the Johannesburg
Municipality. Charles was a Labour Party supporter in Johannesburg and
attended meetings at various halls in Johannesburg, also distributed their
leaflets. Charles might have had a sister or sister-in-law named Margaret.
There was also a lady in the family known as Granny Lindsay. Charlotte Hilda
SWART had a sister, Mary who married Roland? BONNER and had a son Brian.
Mary and her family moved to England and nothing else is known about her.
Charlotte also had a brother, John(?). After Charles William SMITH died on
09 January 1950 in Johannesburg (buried at West Park Cemetery, unmarked
grave), Charlotte lived in Yeoville. She worked for the OK Bazaars in the
Despatch Dept. for 25 years and received a 25 yrs service certifcate from
them. Charlotte died 09 October 1981 and is buried at West Park Cemetery
(marked grave).
