A couple of weeks ago I asked the list if anyone knew what the letter of
Protection was and received no replies.

I have since found out that it was similar to the passes issued to the
black South Africans. This LOP was issued to a Jew by the head of the
village and it allowed the Jew more freedom. This was in the late 1700
early 1800's.
