Just in case it helps, the http://www.cwgc.org/ website lists 7 HERBERT graves
for the South African forces. Of these one mentions the parents being from
East London, Cape, this being one from first world war as below.
FREDERICK WILLIAM HERBERT
Private
5098
4th Regt., South African Infantry
who died on Friday, 14th July 1916. Age 31.
Additional Information: Son of James Peter and Ellen Herbert,
of 109, Cawood St., Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

Commemorative Information
Cemetery: QUARRY CEMETERY, MONTAUBAN, Somme, France
Grave Reference/Panel Number: III. E. 9.

The rest are mainly from Natal and one from Transvaal

Hi Derek and others in NZ -- The Census on the 6th has a question that
was suggested by NZ gen societies -- Do you want Census details to
retained for 100 years (my comment -like the marverlous UK system)
The answer gen societies would hope we all give, I believe, is YES
