My father's mother's maiden name was Mabel Alice HERBERT, and she was
born, married, and died, in England. To the best of my knowledge, none
of the HERBERT family ever went to South Africa. However, amongst the
various unidentifed photos that have come down to me, I have ....
A studio photo taken very late 1890s(?), of a couple - the man bearing
a
strong family resemblance to various HERBERT males appearing in other
identified photos, whilst the lady is quite unfamiliar. The photo is
mounted on a card, on the back of which it states "HERBERT & DUBBIN,
photographers, East London, Cape Colony".
Can anyone identify the photographic firm, and/or supply the full names
of the two partners? Perhaps there are East London Directories in
existence, or early Electoral Rolls, that might carry this information
(and more)? Does anyone have a HERBERT connection? - my HERBERT family
hails from Essex/London, before that from Reading, Berkshire, and
before
that from Cirencester, Gloucestershire.
Any constructive input or suggestions would be very welcome to help me
solve this family mystery.
