Gail:
Take a look at http://www.saevents.co.za/about.htm
In the early days, they mostly came as employees of the Dutch East India
Company, then became independent farmers. Most of the emigrants (up to 1800)
were actually German, not Dutch. Thereafter, they were mostly British.
Best wishes

The Dutch came to South Africa to make sure that they wouldn't be sold by
the Hessian Forces as soldiers to (eg.) England. The second reason was to
elude the hunger and hardship in their country. I'm not so sure if there are
any other reasons, but I'll try to find out for you.
