I've often wondered how many Black South Africans are researching their
family histories. With the importance of ancestors in their culture surely
they must have loads of information. Is it all oral? How many Black South
Africans appear in the early records - Death Notices etc - only the rich
ones.
An aside:
As a marriage officer (a priest with a marriage license) I was amazed when I
did my Dept of Home Affairs Exam that there is a whole lot of different
forms to fill in if I married a black couple. Are there similarly different
forms for Births and deaths. One American priest working here protested
about the differentiation between Black couples and non-black couples and
was told by the (Black) Home Affairs officer to "Just shut up and fill in
the forms"
