Hello Rob
I have a file of assorted data on this family, descended from John
Meaker who died in Grahamstown in 1848 and for whom I have a
Death notice. The surname is rare in Britain and especially in
Wiltshire, although the IGI has a bunch of baptisms in the parish of
Durnford in the late 1600's and a couple in Warminster in the early
1800's. There are more of them to be found in the neighbouring
county of Somerset, where they are on record since the mid
1500's, where they seem to have originated. (there are almost
none in either Gloucestershire or Dorset.) I feel that you should
have some success if you were to write to:
The Wiltshire Record Office
County Hall
Trowbridge BA14 8JG
England
With best wishes
William
