Hello Keith
I don't know when civil registration actually started in earnest, but there
are, what are called 'Vital Records' for various centres available through
the LDS. They have given me invaluable information not available from the
church records that I have consulted. They start in the very late 1800's &
register eg licences issued for a marriage & some death notifications. They
are also a valuable resource for people researching the families of blacks &
coloureds.

Does anyone know the origin or purpose of these records?

Millicent
