Like Barend, I was questioning the date of arrival. Here is the entry from de
Villiers / Pama:
VENTER
Hendrik of Heinrich Venter, v. Hameln, burger en kleremaker op Stellenbosch,
1704 eienaar v.d. plaas "Vleeschbank", a.d. Bergrivier, + 2.5.1713, x
17.7.1690 Johanna Mostert; x 9.12.1691 Anna Viljoen, + 11.5.1713.
(I believe the second marriage should be xx)
Best wishes
Keith

Gerda & Piet,
Approximately 1570 a person with the praenomen Hendrik fled from Deventer in
Overijsel in Holland, to escape the oppression of the Spanish under the Duke
of Alva. The Spanish were Catholic and regarde all Protestants as heretics.
Hendrik settled in Hiddesheim (south of Hanover) in Germany. Here he became
known as Hendrik (Heinrich) "von Dempter" (from Deventer). He married and
had a son known as Heinrich. This latter Heinrich was married twice, his
second marriage in 1620 being to Kunigunde Steven. They moved to Hameln not
far from Hiddesheim.
Their son Heinrich was born on 28 February 1626. He married one Anna Sophie
Kuhleman of Hameln on 31 October 1652. They in turn had a son Heinrich
Conrad who was born on 21 April 1663. He moved to South Africa and became
the progenitor of the Venter family of South Africa. He was born in 1663 so
your date of arrival is obviously incorrect. I do not have specific
information about the date of his arrival in South Africa. However, in South
Africa the farm Nazaret was transfered from Hendrik Cornelisz to "Hendrik
Venter van Hamel" on the 22nd February 1690.
The South African surname Venter presumeably originated from an abreviation
of "Von Dempter" (from Deventer). The South African surname Venter, was
never recognised as a surname in either Holland or Germany according to my
sources. Hence no record of it in Deventer.
The South African surnames Van Deventer, Vandeventer, Van de Venter, etc.
are also not related to the Venters although there progenitor also
originated from Deventer.
