I have used Adobe Photo shop with fantastic results.
It is time consuming and takes a bit of practice. I had a photograph of my
gg grandfather taken in about 1870, but the photo was so faded you could
hardly recognise any features. I scanned the photo in and adjusted the
contrast and all the other things you can do and VOILA there was a wonderful
man beautifully dressed with a cravat around his neck and he had a hat
tucked under his arm !!!
