Andre,

Your comments about the coat of arms were most appropriate and welcome.
We live in Australia too but I am researching my Welsh and Scottish
origins - with an amazing feeling of affinity for the places in which my
ancestors lived and for people I never met.

I'm acutely conscious of the tragic past experienced by Australian
Aborigines, the Khoi, San and other African peoples at the hands of -
well, I suppose, my kin. Like you, I hope the indigenous peoples will be
able to find their roots - damaged as they were - and think that oral
history kept more intact than we might imagine. The archives, as well,
once they can be got at.

I joined this particular list to find a great-uncle who went to South
Africa at the end of the 19th century (and he was quickly found for me)
and have stayed on for a while - Africa and her peoples are wonderful!

best regards,
Mary
