Hi Ann

Taken from "A Chronicle of the Funeral Ceremonies from Muizenberg to the
Motopos, March - April 1902"

(At Groote Schuur)

"On Wednesday evening, April the 2nd, at half past six, a service was held
in front of the bier, attended by the relatives and intimate friends of the
deceased, and conducted by the Rev Canon Ogilvie as rector of Rondebosch.
The coffin was then placed in the outer case, and removed to Cape Town,
followed by Colonel Frank Rhodes, Dr Jameson, Dr Smartt (then Commissioner
of Public Works), Sir C Metcalfe, Mr PJ Jourdan, Mr J Grimmer and Mr Gordon
le Sueur, and escorted by a detachment of the Cape Police, under
Lieutenant-Colonel Robinson, CMG."

( At Houses of Parliament, Cape Town)

"During the night a watch was kept by reliefs of Cape Police, one being
posted at each corner of the bier with arms reversed.......etc."

There are no individual names for the police guards - only their
member-in-charge. Perhaps there is a record elsewhere which gives the names
of these guards and the period of time for each watch.

I looked for the surname Harris and found two amongst some of the principal
wreaths received :-

Dr. Rutherford Harris; and
Mr and Mrs V Harris.

Regards

Jo-anne Pritchard
