Hi All
Nothing to do with SA cemeteries, but here in Mutare, Zimbabwe, we have a
cemetery dating back to the early 1900's - virtually from when the town was
first established. It is still being used for burials and a garden of
rememberance for ashes.
Until a year ago there were 10 gardeners/attendants employed in the cemetery
and it was a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. The graves and the
garden of rememberance were kept in immaculate condition. Now, despite our
municipal rates being drastically increased, there is only one attendant
whom I believe is very ill with TB. He tries his best, but it is just too
much for him and the cemetery is in a shocking state; overgrown grass and
weeds, broken headstones, broken bottles and other types of debris
everywhere.
My sister lost her husband in November last year and his ashes are in the
garden of rememberance. She and I have decided to approach the various
Christian, Muslim and Hindu members of our community in the hopes that we
can organise weekly work teams to rectify the situation and honour our dear
ones. It seems to be the only way we'll overcome the problem.
Regards
