Right I phoned Beulah Newcombe Bruces wife and she referred me to Aubrey who
turns out to live quite close to me and has done as he says 'records on
every living Newcombe' I will go round and see him and have a look at his
research and find out from him if we can make it available.
He says that the Upham comes from the parents of the settler whose mother
was a Miss Baker. Her first husband died and she married William Upham!

Subject: surname NEWCOMBE
I would like to thank everyone for the quick responses to my query on the
surname Newcombe in South Africa - especially Mansell Upham, Val de Kock,
Janet
Melville, Joan Hope and Len Stratford. Here is a summary of the information
I've
received, and I will be sure to pass along anything further that I find.
*** 1st generation ***
Robert NEWCOMBE (b ca 1789) married 2 Jun 1808 Elizabeth SAUNDERS.
They had 5 children, presumably all born in DEV:
1 William Saunders NEWCOMBE
2 Ann Frances NEWCOMBE x Leonard JONES
3 Robert Upham NEWCOMBE x Rachael REID
4 Maryanne NEWCOMBE x John WHITE
5 Richard NEWCOMBE x Caroline Hayman SAUNDERS
Robert, age 31, emigrated from Exeter, DEV on the S. Weymouth, leaving
Portsmouth on 7 Jan 1820, a member of Bailie's Party. He sent for his family
later. He may have had a brother who emigrated as well. I've also seen him
noted
as "Robert NEWCOMBE, 31, p Parkin's". Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
*** 2nd generation ***
Robert Upham NEWCOMBE (b ca Jun 1815, d 31 Mar 1866), d age 50y 9m, bur
Mount
Roberts, Kenkelbosch, Cape. This is the son of emigrant Robert.
*** 3rd generation ***
Robert Upham Leonard NEWCOMBE (b ca Jan 1848, d 15 Aug 1905), d age 57y 7m,
bur
Mount Roberts. Is this the son of Robert Upham above?
*** 4th generation ***
Robert Upham William NEWCOMBE (b ca 1870, d 17 Feb 1959), d age 89y, bur
Nanaga
Meth Ch Cem, Kenkelbosch, Cape. His wife was Alice. Is this the son of
Robert
Upham Leonard above?
Robert William Upham NEWCOMBE (b ca 1875, d 30 Jul 1961), d age 86y, bur
Nanaga
Meth Ch. His wife was Emily Agnes CAITHNESS (b ca 1875, d 16 Oct 1963). He
was
the son of W Newcombe. This W Newcombe was undoubtedly a grandson of
emigrant
Robert, but through which son - William, Robert or Richard?
*** 5th generation ***
Lt Clark Charles Upham NEWCOMBE (1894-1917) died at Ypres, Flanders, was
member
of Worcester Regt, bur Mount Roberts. His mother was Barbara K NEWCOMBE,
whose
husband was most likely a g-grandson of emigrant Robert.
Cpl Leonard Upham Norman NEWCOMBE (1894-1916), bur Mount Roberts. His
brother
was Cecil J NEWCOMBE, who (I think) was associated with the Nanaga Meth Ch.
*** unknown generation ***
Clark Charles Upham NEWCOMBE & Christina Johanna DE REUCK filed for divorce
ca
1967-68.
Robert NEWCOMBE has son Aubrey NEWCOMBE (of Kamma Park, Eastern Cape)
Bruce NEWCOMBE (past Chairman of Agr Soc's cattle section)
Dennis NEWCOMBE (3d generation ?) owned farm "Thornycroft", was a cousin of
Mrs
Len Stratford, member of Nanaga Methodist Ch, his wife was Rosemary LAKE.
His
father was a cousin of Cecil NEWCOMBE (if this is the same Cecil J above,
then
Dennis would be 6th generation?)
(Miss) B A NEWCOMBE (d 5 Aug 1972) was a member of Methodist Ch of Southern
Africa, Grahamstown.
Mrs J M NEWCOMBE works for Rhodes Univ, Hobson Hall, housekeeping staff.
=========================
The Eastern Cape has a strong Newcombe presence, especially dairy farming,
with
farms in Lindhurst & Mount Roberts in the Nanaga area of Alexandria
district.
The Methodist Ch at Nanaga has a Newcombe Hall & family tree of Robert
Newcombe
& his brother. (I'm guessing that this is the emigrant Robert - I would love
to
see this family tree.) The Anglican Ch at Nanaga has many Newcombe photos on
the
walls.
I know this is alot to ask, but is there anyone in the area of these
churches
who might have some time to check these out? I would be happy to reimburse
any
expenses associated with gathering this information ... within reason, of
course. :-)
Thank you,
Brad Wilson
