For interest sake, Home Affairs have awarded a tender worth R800 million for
the implementation of HANIS (Home Affairs National Identity System).
This is a highly sophisticated system which will centre around fingerprint
and image recognition. A pilot for fingerprint recognition underwent testing
in Kwa-Zulu Natal, where pension payouts were made from mobile units in the
rural areas, some five years ago, and proved highly successful.
The elderly simply placed a thumb on a scanner, and bingo! For the
sceptics - no, someone else's thumb won't pass the test :)
Ultimately, the aim of HANIS is to have a database containing details of
every individual in this country, complete with photographs, drivers
license, voter registration, etc. (accessible on a national basis).
I don't recall all the details, but who knows, maybe they will listen to
Delia, and port the STAIRS data?
Cheers,
Ron
