Thanks Anne for a useful timeline. As a matter of interest I'd like to
include:

1823
Lewis Broadbent born to the wife of the Methodist missionary Samuel
Broadbent at Leeudoringstad, 16km from Wolmaranstad, on the 1st July 1823.
Lewis later became a missionary to India.

I am not sure if Lewis was the first but certainly one of the first
Europeans to be born in the Transvaal. In the spirit of our new nation one
naturally wonders who are the first recorded Dutch, English, Malay,
Indian, etc births in Southern Africa?
