To all Listers,

I volunteer in our local LDS Family History Centre and the situation with
the SA Death Notices is as follows:

The South African LDS Microfilm Order Centre (the central place in South
Africa) where all the films are ordered from Salt Lake City to be viewed by
patrons who attend their local Family History Centre offers a special
service to the local patrons who use the LDS facilities. They hold an almost
full set of microfilm of SA Death Notices that the LDS Church has been
allowed to film of deaths registered up till 1950. In each FHC in SA there
is a form that patrons use to order copies of these death notices. They have
to supply the name of the deceased, the province of their death, the year
their death is registered, and the relevant Microfilm No. that the death
notice is on. They cost R2.50 each. Then each Thursday afternoon a volunteer
lady makes copies of those requested death notices and she mails them back
to the patrons who requested them.

To people who live outside of SA they can order the relevant microfilm
through their local LDS FHC to view in the Centre. This does entail a wait
though.

I hope this clears the confusion slightly!

Regards
Judy Milne
