Hello Pat and Rhodie researchers

The families left Pretoria in April 96 and reached Fort Victoria some time
later.
In the chapter on the Cawood/Hulley trek Zillah Hulley wrote:

'My father and uncle joined the volunteer forces at once. I still have
father's Matabele rebellion medal."

The Zim Archives wrote me "the BSAC medal rolls:Rhodesia: 1896-7 show three
Cawoods who received the 1896 Medal with clasp: Trooper JS Cawood; Trooper
LH Cawood; and Trooper O Cawood. All served in the Victoria Rifles Corps."
This would have James Smith and his sons, Lionel Hilton (abt 18) and Oliver
(abt 16).

The irony of it is that after all the hardship to get to Melsetter James
Smith Cawood died of malaria less than two years later.

I accept that they don't appear in the book on the '96 rebellion but where
would I find out more?

Regards
Betty Murray
