Does anyone know where I can find a list of passengers on the S.S. Waratah
for her last voyage from Durban in 1909?
I recently came across a newspaper cutting about Bloemfontein people
lost with the Drummond Castle off Ushant in 1896. She was headed for
England, and among her passengers were Alex. E.K. Donaldson and a friend
by the name of Hinds. They were going to England to raise capital to
establish a mine in the Odendaalsrust area. They had found an outcrop of
gold, the richest yet, and had managed to keep it all a secret. This all
came to nothing, both were lost in the sinking!
The cutting goes on to mention that Alex. Donaldson's sister was also
lost at sea, she was on the Waratah in 1909!
Alex was my Great Great Uncle, and I know of two sisters, but which one
was on the Waratah?
I have tried the Natal Witness and the Mercury newspapers, but had no joy
from
either.
Cheers
Mike
