Dear listers
Just for the record... Wally Greig (to whom many thanks) kindly sent my
steam train enquiry (how long Cape
to Kimberley in the 1890s?) to the South African Railfans list
A 1907 pocket timetable indicates 31 hours - not bad, being a single line
most of the
way, and following the contours very closely in those early years.
A statement made in 1894 was that new locomotives on order would reduce
travelling time to Johannesburg to 48 hours.
A special train programme for 1897 gives 33 and three quarter hours for the
run up
to Kimberley.
Best wishes
David Morris
