Subject: LEIGHTON IN SA
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

Hello Jennifer,

I saw your name on the South Africa list and felt I had to contact you
to see if perhaps you are a long lost cousin. (Fingers are crossed).

My name is Sandra Dube', and I live in a remote community in North West
British Columbia, Canada. I am researching my my mother's family and I
am not having very much luck. She knows very little about her father's
family only names and possible places of birth. My mother's maiden name
was LEIGHTON.

Her father was Sidney Stanley Leighton, who according to his Canadian
WW1 records was born Sept. 15, 1893 in South Shields, Durham, England.
It is not known when he came to Canada but he was in the USA for a
period of at least 13 months prior to enlisting in the Canadian army.
(he served 13 months in the US military.)

His Canadian records state that he had a brother Benjamin and a sister
Florence.
In 1914 his next of kin ( brother?), Benjamin lived at 78 Market Street,
Boksburg, Transvaal, South Africa.

In 1917/18 his sister Florence (Mrs. R. Brompton) lived at 18 Pepys
Road, New Cross, London, England.

This is all the information I have so far. I have tried getting
Sidney's birth certificate but the one I got does not seem to be the
right one. I am now trying to get Florence's marriage certificate in
the hopes that it will supply me with more information.

Am I wrong in thinking that there were or could not have been too many
Leighton's in South Africa in the early part of the 1900's?

If any of this seems familiar to you could you please let me know? Even
if it doesn't I would enjoy hearing from you. I realize I may be
clutching at straws, but I decided when I started with this "obsession"
to leave no stone unturned.

Best regards.

Sandra

Kemano, B.C. Canada
