Why Iasked if you were sure of the baptism is that there was a large Jewish community in Oudshoorn at the turn of the century. With the collapse in the feather market on the out break of war in 1914, the community began to disperse. There is a local Jewish Genealogical Society & also Jewish Genealogy on the Internet would help. Birth certificates are obtainable from the Dept of the Interior in Pretoria. Hi,
I am new to this list and would like to say to everyone.
I have been very succesful in tracing my father's ancestors from the
Essex County, Massachusetts,USA, roots list and now it is my mother's
turn.
The facts are that she, Mary Augusta Gross, was born in Oudtshoorn on
July 4,
1901 to August Gross and Julia Gross (nee Julia Wagner). Her father
immigrated from Germany in the late 1800's, but her mother was born in
South Africa on Jan. 21, 1879 and highly probable that was also in
Oudtshoorn. I am sure my mother was baptized in the Dutch Reform
church. Does anyone on this list have any resources that might be
helpful in locating my grandmother's family, Wagner of Oudtshoorn ?
Thank you,
Ted Sargent U.S.A.
