Hello Susan
Can you provide a death date for JB Chimes?
Brixton Cemetery is in eastern Johannesburg and I can phone the records
office to find the grave number and then a man at the cemetery who very
kindly checks the grave to see if there is a headstone which could give
more information.
Regards

I'm looking for information on my greatgrandparents' families: Chimes, Nel
and
Smith.

My greatgrandfather Jacob Bernard CHIMES emigrated to South Africa around
1899
from Lithuania with his wife Lena. He was founder of the Chimes Hotel in
Benoni where a gold mine was named after him. As a Yiddish interpreter, he
reportedly came in contact with Barney Barnato and Cecil Rhodes. His
obituary
says he was buried in the Jewish Cemetery, Brixton. Can anyone tell me
where
that is? Is there a way to order his death certificate?

My other South African greatgrandparents were Emmanuel Peterson SMITH (b. 5
May) and Anna Susannah NEL (b. 19 March). My grandmother Gertrude SMITH was
born in the Cape Province around 1902.

My mother was Rita Lena CHIMES. She emigrated to the United States in the
mid-
late 1940s.

I'm in the United States, so I don't have very good access to South African
resources. Any research suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
