Hi!
An entry from Johannes van Riebeeck's journal, dated 17 April, 1658, states:
"The sick-comforter, Pieter van der Stael of Rotterdam, has been entrusted
with the task of giving them instruction in the morning and the afternoon,
besides his duty of visiting the sick, particularly because he reads Dutch
well and correctly. To encourage slaves to attend and to hear or learn the
Christian prayers, it is ordered that after school everyone is to receive a
small glass of brandy and 2 inches of tobacco."
Anyone for returning to Grade one??
Kind regards
