Subject: SMITH - BARBADOS
Hello all!
Is there perhaps an historian who could figure out the following problem for
me please?
Our 2X great grandmother, Harriett Smith (born O'Conner) died in 1863. Her
death notice in the Cape Archives gives her place of death as the
'residence of her eldest son' (who was Charles Bagot Smith). The actual
location is not entered. In turn, Charles' death notice gives his place of
death as 'Nurney' (the family farm in Lower Albany in the Eastern Cape) in
1884.
We know that both mother and son (and his family) were in Barbados at some
time and some of us were led to believe that Harriett and indeed, Charles,
died and were buried there. It seems that Charles died in SA but the
question is ... would there be a death notice for Harriet in the Archives if
she had died in Barbados? The reading of her will certainly took place at
Uitenhage (according to a lawyer's letter) ... 'because most of the family
are resident in the area.'
In addition, I would like to know a bit more about why the SA Military were
sent to Barbados (Charles was a military man).
I would appreciate any comments ...
Regards ... Dave Glenister <>
