Subject: Rawsons of Kimberley

Dear Sir

I wonder if you can help?

I have records of my Grandfather being English on my Father's Birth
Certificate.
The original is a Cape Colony document, And names my Father as Arthur Ernest
Foster Rawson, his Father as Thomas Granville Rawson, born in England.

A copy from Pretoria has my Dad's names misspelt, no doubt because some
official couldn't decipher my Grandfathers handwriting.

T.G. Rawson was a Pharmacist, an Agent at Law, whatever that is, and a
farmer, the farm being at Berkley West.

He was also a Fremason, and an Anglican.

My Dad Was born on 26th August, 1906, and I am told by the family that his
father died when he was four years old, so about 1910.

It appears that T.G. Rawson was not born with those names, one family story
says that he was Shanghied or pressganged, and jumped ship in Cape Town.

He was a cousin to Ernest Foster, an employee of the City Of Johannesburg for
many years, I think in the sanitation department.

One of my Fathers sisters married a Bredenkamp, I do not know his name, but I
did meet his sons, Lionel,Dennis, and I am sure another.

My knowledge of my South African family is scant, as my Dad emigrated to
Southern Rhodesia, married a girl from Mazoe, who had pioneer parents of
South African descent, but that is another story.

Can you help me trace my Grandfathers origin and confirm his name?

Sincerely,

Dennis G. Rawson

Regards

Conrod Mercer
