Hi all,

Mention has been made before on this list about the Genealogical
Society of South Africa (GSSA) and of their quarterly journal
"Familia."

I know that a number of the subscribers to this list are also members
of the socitey.

For those of our subscribers who are not members, I thought I would
give some information about the society and "Familia."

The Goals of GSSA are:

1. To promote and facilitate interest and research in genealogy and
family history to present members, to the genealogical hobbyist
and to all members of the public who may be interested in
genealogy and/or family history.
2. To promote general understanding
of Genealogy and its value, to understand and maintain
professional status and dignity for genealogists amongst members
of GSSA and the general public.
3. To encourage the observance of
the highest standards of research by by members of GSSA. To
provide a wide range of educational courses, research programmes
and services for the general benefit of GSSA branches and members
as well as any other service or assistence as may from time to
time be decided upon by the National Council of the GSSA.
4. To encourage and develop links with Family History Societies.
5. To establish and maintain contact with like minded Societies
throughout the world.
6. To establish a certificate program to
promote the reliability, professionalism and integrity of all
South African Genealogists and Record Researchers.
7. To assist in the preservation of all genealogical records and memorabilia.

Membership to the GSSA is open to anyone interested in Genealogical
Research in South Africa.

Memberhip fee is R45,00 and include subscription to the Society's
quarterly journal. Familia Application for membership and
correspondence regarding payments should be sent to the Treasurer :

Members outside South Africa must in excess of their membership fee,
pay a mailing fee to cover postage, either by surface or air mail.

All members, unless the secretary is instructed otherwise, belongs to
a specific Branch of the Society.

Familia is a quarterly journal published by the Society.
Articles and correspondence in connection with the journal should be

Subscription to Familia includes membership of the Society.
For subscribers in South Africa the cost is R45.00 per year; for
subscribers elsewhere it is R85,00 when Familia is sent by surface
mail and R170,00 when it is sent by air mail. Back numbers of FAMILIA
are available from the Research Enquiry Secretary. at R10,00 per
number. All subscriptions for FAMILIA and orders for backnumbers must
be sent to the Society at their official address.
