Ken was walking past the archives today in Pietermaritzburg so I popped in
and called up the name Pierre Joubert for you. It does not appear that there
are any photos/portraits of him in any of the archives/museums connected to
the computer

I may be carrying coals to Newcastle but I just thought I would give a tip
to those of you on the list who are not familiar with the archives computer.

When you go to the archives you should first call up the name that you are
researching on the computer. If there are many references to that name print
them out at 5c per page which holds about 5 references - saves a lot of time
and you can go through them at your leisure at home and plan your next trip.

When calling up a name use the "RSAE" search mode as this covers the whole
of South Africa and not just the archives branch that you are in. If you
want to search the tombstone inscriptions on computer then use the "GENE"
search mode.

Once into the system type in the surname you want. If you want a specific
person with that surname then type it in as "SURNAME" ADJ "GIVEN NAME"
leaving out the inverted commas of course. If you type it in as "SURNAME"
AND "GIVEN NAME" you will get references to everybody with that surname
coupled with anybody with that given name. For example if I were to type in
Ken's query as JOUBERT AND PIERRE it would show up every Joubert coupled in
the same document with anybody named Pierre e.g. "JOUBERT, Johannes and
Smit, PIERRE applied for a licence to trade" (a fictitious example).
Obviously we are not interested in this because we want only Pierre Joubert.
So if you type in JOUBERT ADJ PIERRE then the computer will tell you how
many JOUBERT references there are, how many PIERRE references there are and
finally how many PIERRE JOUBERT references there are e.g. (another
fictitious example) "JOUBERT, PIERRE bought 2 oxen from Smit, Johannes." In
both the examples the computer will tell you the number of references there
are to the name/names asked for.

Hope that this is of some use and is clearly put.
