Dear Mr Wood,
I think that you have got your facts wrong. There were NO Zulus in Cape Town
in 1840 (probably very few there now!). I suspect that your WOOD family were
the 3 WOOD men (probably brothers) who arrived with SEPHTON's party of 1820
Settlers on the Aurora. One of these (Charles) had a son Thomas FREDERICK
Wood aged 3. Charles died in 1852 (death notice 6/9/60 1667 held in the
Archives in Cape Town). I am sorry but I am too far away from Cape Town to
go to the Archives to look up that death notice for you. Perhaps there is
some kind soul on the list that will? Also I would contact Mr William
Jervois <> at the Albany Museum and see if he can shed
some light on Charles WOOD. I have looked in my books ("Chronicles of the
Lower Albany District" by E. Morse Jones and there is no mention of Charles
WOOD and no mention of a WOOD being killed by the Xhosa. In my other book
"The Story of the British Settlers of 1820 in South Africa" by H. E. Hockly
it only mentions Charles as being a member of Sephton's party aboard the
ship "Aurora").
Hope that another aspirant "archangel" in South Africa will take up the ball
(hopefully not a rugby ball as he will be sure to knock on :-)) and run with
it and help you further.
Kind regards
Mike O'Connor
