Hi Mike,
Count your blessings that you are one of the "chosen frozen" in Hamilton! :-)
SOLOMON was a well known name in Cape Town with Saul SOLOMON being a
printer/publisher if my memory serves me correctly. Anyway he had something
to do with publishing as I think that there were Saul SOLOMON Directories
(don't bet on it though!). Hold on a second and I will see if he is
mentioned in the Dictionary of South African Biography.
You are in luck - he is! Volume 1. He was born 1817/05/25 on St. Helena
Island and he died 1892/10/16 in Kilcreggan, Scotland. He was the second son
of Joseph SOLOMON and he was a printer, newspaper proprietor and
parliamentarian (you see my memory is still not too bad! :-) ). He married
Georgina Margaret Thompson in 1874 (although he was Jewish this does not
sound like a Jewish name). There are about 2 pages devoted to him (too much
to transcribe!).
My memory (remember it is not failing!) also tells me that there is a book
on the Solomon family but I do not know if it the same family as Saul. I do
know that a Miss Connor/O'Connor married a Solomon in Kimberley and they had
2 daughters. Not sure of their names now but I did know once upon a time
(darn it there goes the memory :-)!)
Somebody in Cape Town should be able to get you information on Saul Solomon.
Keep well and kind regards
Mike O'Connor
P.S. I am busy entering O'CONNOR/CONNOR/CONNOR names into an International
O'Connor Database (somethign like a one name study) that I am creating and I
am currently coming across a lot of O'CONNORS with Hamilton connections.
