Hi Betty
Thanks for your message re the Snell family and their connection with
the Murrays. My apologies for the delay in replying!
My husband's grandfather was John Vibert SNELL (born Hertford 1855)
son of John Howe SNELL and Ethelreda VIBERT.
He emigrated to SA in the late 1800s and lived for a time in
Barberton. He then came to Johannesburg where he married Mary Ann
SHEEHAN (born 1866 Fort Murray, King Williamstown) in 1894.
I have so far been unable to trace Mary Ann SHEEHAN's parents.
They finally settled in East London where he ran the business
Bellgrove and Snell. They had 6 children - John Vibert, William
Trevor, Ethel Mary, Dorothy Ursula, Gladys Muriel and Arthur Harold.
He died in 1945.
I am trying to find out more about the English connection. We know that
John Howe SNELL was a curate in the Anglican church at the time of
John Vibert SNELL's birth (Long Marston, Tring, Hertford, UK).
Family story is that he was the parish priest at St Ives, Cornwall at
some stage. He was the son of John SNELL and Ann SELLOR
(no details about them).
Ethelreda VIBERT was the daughter of John Pope VIBERT, her mother
unknown.
Most of my research has been done at the Church of the LDS and,
contrary to an earlier message re the Thorntons, I have found wills,
ANCs, distribution accounts etc. filmed with the death notices and
have been able to glean a lot of info from these.
I am the Secretary of the Northern Transvaal Branch of the
Genealogical Society of South Africa (GSSA) and will try to pass on
names and addresses of our members researching some of the names
I have seen on this list. Unfortunately many of these members don't
have email facilities and correspondence will have to be by snailmail.
If anyone is interested, our branch is having an genealogy open day
on Saturday, 16 August 1997, at Melrose House, Jacob Mare Street,
Pretoria from 10:00 to 16:00. Everyone welcome!
Cheers
