I am attempting to find out if my grandfather did, indeed, pass
through South Africa before coming to the U.S. I have very little
information on him. His name was Samuel Freedman, from Sidlova,
Russia. The town possibly is in Lithuania. I know definitely that
he arrived in the U.S. from Liverpool about November 23, 1899, and
family lore has his traveling to S. Africa first. I am assuming for
now that he left Europe through Hamburg, but have no supporting facts
at this point. Are records available that could help me?
