The confusion may be due to the fact that the plimsoll site states the year
as 1925 in the body of the text, but lists 1933 next to DATE below the photo.
1933 is correct.
She served from 1901 until 1933.
The Celtic was launched 4 April 1901 at Belfast, Northern Ireland, she was
the first ship in the world to exceed 20,000 gross tons, and remained the
largest ship in the world until 1903.
The only record I have of the Celtic in 1925 was when, on April 25, 1925, the
ship collided with the Coast Line’s Hampshire Coast in the Irish Sea. The
Celtic was unharmed but the Hampshire Coast suffered badly from the collision.
In 1928 just off Cobh (Queenstown) the Celtic was grounded on Roches Point.
The engines were ordered full astern, and she came off, but only to be
grounded again on Calf Rocks. After some failed salvage attempts, the Celtic was
declared a total loss. The Celtic’s two funnels were immediately cut down,
because they hindered the Roches Point Lighthouse beam. The wreck was sold to
Petersen and Albeck, a Danish company. They broke the Celtic up where she lay.
In 1933 the last remains of the Celtic were taken away.
My grandparents came to the USA on her in September 1914.
