It seems I've broken my own rule, which is not sending straggler posts
through to the list. I was responding to a message board post from Schlomo
ben Avraham Pinhero. Here's the post I was responding to:

"Just a small note of mention: During the Inquisition, many fled to England,
Netherlands, France, Barbados. The West and East India companies were formed
by the Portuguese refugees and employed, maintained stock holders who were
Jews until the English took over the companies by force from the Portuguese.
There were hundreds of Jews who lived in England after they were allowed
back into the country by the King for economic advantage. So if you find
Jewish names during the periods of 1600s to 1800s in these areas or America,
they were Jews, some were in name only, some were still religious
observants, but a Jew is a Jew, as a Gentile is a Gentile etc. But remember
also, a name is a name, not all Jews are identifiable as Jews by their
names. Many Christian and other religions use Jewish or Bibilical names (
i.e. suffixes of -berg, -burg, -borg, -stein, etc.do not always denote a
Jewish heritage.) First names like Jay which comes from Jacob is used by
both Jew and Gentile alike. The same applies for surnames like "de Silva."
The variances in names are immense, especially in America. "
