HiMargaret, I'm flattered that you thought of me to solve your problem. Unfortunately, I am a rank amatuer in this matter. I suggest to you that you send the same query to the sephardic mailing list. To join it . I have already sent a copy to them but it helps often to post the same query evry 2 months or so, as new people join all the time , and old people make spurts of progress that suddenly intersect with your interests. When you have subscribed add the names you are interested in to your e-mail, so that anyone interested in those families can contact you.
The very best of luck , and please let me know the names you are loking for as well as I amy stumble over relevent info.
Cheers, Allan Clarke in Canada

Hello
Please excuse me for bothering you but I have just been reading all the queries on Rootsweb and am particularly interested. I will try to keep this as brief as possible: I have been researching my husband's family for quite a few years now. They were living in Lambeth, Camberwell etc. during the late 1800's. I was having problems finding his grandparents marriage - every request I made for a marriage certiicate for his gfather Frederick Spender was returned as not being correct.
Then, last week I thought I would try once more and looked at the 1901 census. I found his g-parents living at the correct address as shown on his father's b.certificate. The surprise to us being it stated his g-father was born in Spain and was a naturalised British subject.
I then realised that there was possibly a name change - and could answer why I was unable to find the marriage, if it had been under a different name.
I know that I will have to go to the PRO, hopefully this week to search the records. However, when I telephoned them to ask if the records were cross-indexed under both surnames, the lady said no. So, I will have to go through every one hoping to find the right person.
I may be wrong, but I had the thought that perhaps the g-father who was born in Spain (possibly around 1852), may have been Jewish.
I noticed on the 1901 census that one of his daughters was named Esther. I know that this is a very biblical name.
Sorry for the length of this, but do you think the name Spender could have derived from a Jewish surname?
Many thanks for your time
Margaret Spender
