CHUCK GERDAU
Welcome to the ninth edition of the Whitson Newsletter.
Currently I am working on the Scottish-Whitson pages for the Whitson
Club site. This is taking quite a while to finish as I am going
through all available data and making sure everything is as close to
`correct' as possible. Will also have an end of year newsletter
dedicated to the Scottish Whitsons.
I recently received a letter from Linda Whitson in Gloucester,
England. She is researching back to George Whitson who was baptised
1748 in Newland. Anyone out there that can help her please let me
know and I will pass it along.
You never know what your closest relatives have in a
shoebox..........My wife's grandmother recently came across some a
letter from 1910 on our Whitson line. Joseph Rice Whitson, my wife's
gg grandfather, was born 10 September 1820 (Madisonville, TN) and died
26 February 1877 (Lauderdale Co., TN) of gallstones. His wife was
Delany Spann Whitson (LDS has her as Lainey Foster) born 7 May 1832 d.
1 Aug. 1875.

MOSES WHITSON
Moses Whitson (HENRY, THOMAS, THOMAS, THOMAS, THOMAS, MOSES, MOSES)
was my Great Grandfather. He was born January 24, 1840 in
Pennsylvania. What follows is his obituary as it appeared in the
Hagerstown Globe in 1934:
Capt. Whitson dies in Oregon
Former prominent resident of this City Passes Away at Age 84.
Captain Moses C. Whitson, Civil War veteran and member of C. B.
Compton Post G. A.R., died at the family residence, at St. John's,.
near Portland, Oregon, Monday morning, April 28, at the advanced age
of 84 years. He suffered a stroke of paralysis about 18 months ago but
had greatly improved and was able to walk about until the past two
months when his heart began to fail, and since that time has been
unable to lie down and passed away in his chair. Captain Whitson was
formerly a well known resident of Hagerstown. He was until his death a
regular reader or The Hagerstown Globe.
Captain Whitson was a native of Pennsylvania where he received his
education. He followed the teaching profession a short time. In 1862
he enlisted in the Federal Army as Second Sargeant of C Company,...
122nd Penn. Volunteers, and before being mustered out was promoted
to sargeant. With this company he participated in the battles of
Chantilly, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. He reenlisted in
1863 as captain of Co C 15th Penn. Volunteers under Colonel
Franklin.
During the war he attented the Duff Commercial College of Pittsburgh
and was later employed as a teacher In that college. In 1864 he came
to Washington county (MD) where he engaged in the furnace business in
this city, and where he purchased extensive farm lands.. He also
engaged in politics In this county, serving as delegate. to the
county convention, and as presiding officer. In 1871 he chosen.to the
Legislature from this county and served for six years as Republican
State Central Cornrnitteeman. In 1881 he served as United States
Collector and was in the United States Treasury Department for three
years.
He was proud of the fact that his first vote was cast for Lincoln and
until the past two years he never failed to vote.
On October 13, 1869 he was married to Mary C. Gehr of Maryland, who
with three children survive him. A daughter, Mrs. W.F. Dettering
resides In San Diego, a son. H. W. Whitson is in the city hall at
Seattle, and Miss Ravenna Whitson, a daughter, has been at home for.
the past year to care for her father. She formerly resided in New
York city where she was a.trained nurse. A son, Captain Kaolin
Whitson died In the Philippines in 1919 and was brought to Arlington
Cemetery D.C. for burial.
Mr. and Mrs. Whitson went to St. Johns in 1910 and purchased the
residence where Mr. Whitson passed away. Mrs. Whitson's brother J.B.
Gehr is in the city engineers office in Portland.
Funeral Services were conducted by the G.A.R. and the body was taken
to the Portland Crematory. At his request his ashes were strewn on
the Willamette River."
Next, I hope to tell you about Moses' son Kaolin Whitson who was my
mother's father and my grandfather.
TIDBITS OF THE MONTH
Accessing a will (from Gen Methods list)
Wills if properly processed through the probate court are public
record. You would need to contact the Probate Court/County Clerk of
the county where the person died (or I guess where the will was
executed) they should have at least a record of the will going through
probate if not the entire will. It seems that probate is one of the
first things a county starts recording (#1 land ownership, #2 taxes,
#3 probate) a lot of places have probate records tht predate births
and deaths.
If the will was not taken through probate court, then there may be no
record.
I haven't gotten any wills yet for genealogical purposes yet, but I
imagine they could be interesting reading leading to some unknown
friends and family of the deceased.
55th Mass. Volunteer Infantry-Letter E
Evans, Armstead, Private, age 41, Co. K. Died 1/5/1889. Address
given at time of enlistment was Chillicothe, Ohio. Occupation given
as Cooper. 1st wife: Betsey Evans, deceased. Married 2nd wife Nancy
Whitson on 12/20/1886 at Ross Co., Ohio. She died 10/3/1901. Lived
at West Jefferson, Ohio. No children listed.
A little tid-bit for the letter
Local Histories, Crawford Co.AR.
State Representatives John Lasater killed Wm. Whitson in the dispute
over the re-location of Crawford Courthouse to Whitson's store at
"Whitsontown". In 1833, Wm.Whitson also served as one of Crawfords
County's representatives in the State House. Altho the court ruled it
to be a case of self-defense, John W. Whitson, son of the deceased,
killed Lasater on Oct.10.1838, in revenge. A $1000.00 reward was
offered for the apperehension of Whitson, who was cited at
Fayetteville, the day after the murder. He reportedly fled to western
Tennessee where his Mother was living. As early as 1826 John Lasater
was operating a salt works on the Illinois River,in present day
Oklahoma. He and his wife Mary, who died in 1840, are burried in the
southeast section of Fairview Cametery in Van Buren.
Jerry/Idaho
(Wm. Whitson is believed to have left Louisiana and relocated to
Arkansas)

I am trying to find a female Whitson that married a Tom Nation in
Jackson County, Illinois. Their son George Washington Nation born in
1876.

Thanks for the response. I've been doing some more research of late
(basic census work), and it seems to me that my Harvey C. WHITSON
(ca.1820/IL-Bf.1870/IL) is the s/o Thomas WHITSON
(ca.1786/NC-Af.1860/IL), and he is the s/o William WHITSON
(ca.1762/NC-Nov 1806/NC) and his wife Ann McDOWELL. Can you comment
or add to this bit of speculation?
Steve Rosen
I found these in my files and thought that you might could use them.
