Lester, James Quincey



MARION -- Funeral services for Mr. James Quincey Lester (Que) will be held
at 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, from the Bethel United Methodist Church,
628 S. Main Street, Marion, S.C. Burial will follow in the Springville
Church Cemetery. The Rev. James Moore, Pastor and the Rev. Willie Dicks Jr.
will be officiating. Davis Funeral Service will be directing.

Mr. Lester, 75, was born one of 11 children on May 20, 1928, in Marion, to
the late Lucius E. Lester Sr. and Cora McNeil Lester. He departed this life
into eternal rest on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical
Center.



He attended Marion County Schools, after which he enlisted in the U.S. Air
Force. His 22 year Air Force career included service in Tuley Greenland,
Lajes Air Field, Portugul, Pope AFB, N.C., Myrtle Beach AFB, Shaw AFB,
Charleston AFB, Vietnam and Elmendorf AFB, Alaska.



After his retirement from the Air Force, Que was involved in many community
services. He provided public transportation through Swamp Fox Taxi service,
volunteered as a fireman and supported Veteran's Affairs. He was a member
and secretary of the Cedar Grove Masonic Lodge No. 347.



Que was an active and faithful member of Springfield United Methodist Church
which is part of the Marion Parish consisting of sister churches: Bethel
United Methodist Church and Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. He was a
Chairperson of the Finance and Trustee Boards as well as a member of the
Committee on Lay Leaders.



His hobbies included gardening, which resulted in him being recognized in
2003 as a Marion "Yard of the Month" winner, coin collecting, photography
and fishing. He had a deep commitment to his family. He was often found
being a nurturer and encourager to his children, nieces, nephews and
grandchildren. He continuously supported and encouraged the family to
participate in family and church events with enthusiasm and humility,
believing it was good to serve others. Que's life was full of good deeds
that cannot and will never be forgotten.



"Que" leaves to cherish his loving memories: Five children, Thelma Bowens
(Donald) of Marion, James Edward Lester (Sherry) of Greensboro, N.C.,
Marilynn Lester Hill (Sam) of Charlotte, N.C., Jerome Lester of Marion, and
Darryl Lester (Dionne) of Raleigh, N.C.; one brother, Leon Lester
(Catherine) of Marion; six sisters, Eddie Mae James (the late Albert James)
of Marion, Lala Lester and Helen Lester of Bronx, N.Y., Sophia Evans (John)
of Wilmington, Del., Cora Syphrett (Rye) of St. George, Shirley Halley
(Roosevelt) of Camden; fifteen grandchildren, Donna Lisa Bowens, Leslie
Bowens, Crosby Bowens, Delwana Deas, Phynes Holden, Cleveland Dorsey, Tameka
Lester, Kaneeca Coletrain, Bradley Clay, Quinten Lester, Sheresha Lester,
Jamie Lester, Ashley Lester, Halee Sloan and Danielle Lester; 10
great-grandchildren, Brittany, Elliott, Crosby Jr., Allaya, Devin, Lorenzo,
Tanesha, LaQuentin, Kalil and Kennedy; Mrs. Ruth Lester, wife and mother of
his children: James, Marilynn, Marian, Wayne, Jerome and Darryl; three
sisters-in-law, Alene Lester and Helen Lee of Marion, and Rachel Bowden of
Wilmington, N.C., and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.



Marian Lester Ferrell and Wayne Lester preceded their father in death. Three
siblings, William Porter Lester, Evelina Lester Eaddy and Lucius Edward
Lester preceded him in death.



Sincere thanks is extended to the following family members and friends for
extraordinary support and encouragement: Edwin "Sam" Hill, Mrs. Claretha
Conner, Howard Emmanuel, Chaplain W.F. Dicks, Mrs. Florence Foxworth,
Strawberry Street neighbors, the Marion Veteran's Affairs Staff, McLeod
Oncology (6W) and Marion DHEC medical professionals.



In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Springville United
Methodist Building Fund.
