Wayne, I remember Granny Hodges's sweetgum stick she used with her gullet of
snuff. Mama also used a sweetgum stick as a toothbrush. Granny, the true
leader of the James Gang had her snuff with her every where she went. I
recall once she spit snuff in a snake's eyes and he took off for parts
unknown. She also had an old coffee can she kept her Luzianne coupons in as
well as an old "meat" fork that she had eaten with since her early days. It
was almost worn out, the tines sharper than an ice pick.I wonder where those
items are today...does your mom have them? And one of her old home-made
bonnets...I'd like to have one of those. I could tell some good old stories
about life with the one kerosene lamp we had, etc., and should've done so
for the soon-to-come-out second millenium issue of the Dillon Herald but time
just didn't permit. I hope your mom contributed something to the Herald; she
certainly has some good old stories and a keen mind with which to recall and
tell them. And, in reference to electricity coming to the mill village, I
surely recall that. I have a knot on a finger now that I obtained
electrocuting flies in the fuse box.
