Wayne, I regret not knowing about the memorial to James Barfield in Mt. Holly
Cemetery. It must have been erected while I was away at school. James and I
are a wee bit older than you and you possibly do not remember him well. He
was a good childhood friend and, like so many of those our age, he enlisted
in the Navy. He was lost on the USS Franklin (CV-13).
As you might know, the government will furnish free markers for those old
Civil War veterans buried in Mt. Holly (or elsewhere) if there were some way
we could obtain their names. By the way, it was in the area where those old
CW markers were once located that the real estate fellow was attempting to
sell lots.
