The McDonalds and McDaniels are nearly always the same name until you get
high literacy (say 1860s). You have to go with similarity in name sounds
until then. I have many relatives who are McDaniels some times and
McDonald other times - sometimes it is McDannel, McDonnel, McDonnal, or
even McDowell occasionaly (including deviations in the census, marriage
records, land deals and all). So on the Randal case you are on the border
in terms of the time period, so the name probably got 'stuck' in either
McDonald or McDaniel around that time. But prior to that it could very
easily be McDonald.
