Lecture Series--Abduraghman/Gool Families of Cape Town
Here is a story on one of the most important Non-White 'political families'
in Cape Town.
My name is Dr Selim Gool and I am the nephew of Councillor Mrs. Zainunissa
'Cissie' Gool, whose father, Dr Abdullah Abduraghman was the first
'Non-White' to sit in local government (from 1905 to 1940) - a record of 35
years of 'Clean' Local Government. My father, Dr Goolam Gool and my
mother, Mrs Halima Gool, as well as my Uncle and Aunt, Issac Bongani Tabata
and Jainup Gool, were leading radicals of the Political Generation of the
1930s onwards.
I represent the third-generation of Cape Town members of this family lineage
and have a broad knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of municipal
politics in this town. My information may well fit in well with your
readership, seeing that this year is the 10th anniversary of the democratic
transition and also an election year.
I have been doing historical and geneological research into my family's
'roots' (see files below) and am to present parts of my material at a
series of meetings/lecture series arranged through the District Six Museum
Foundation, at their Memorial Hall annex, on Buitenkant Street on the
following Tuesdays:
Date : Tuesday, 9 March 2004 :

Date : Tuesday, 30 March 2004
Lecture 3 on - "The Young Turks - Goolam, Jane and Halima Gool (et al)
and the Politics of Hope": The challenges of a New Generation of Radicals
Venue : District Six Museum Foundation, at their Memorial Hall annex, on
Buitenkant Street,Cape Town

Lecture 4 on - A Critical Evaluation of the Strategies and Politics of
the above: What can we learn for Today from our chequered political past?

Hoping to hear from you at your earliest convenience if you are interested
in this story.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Selim Y. Gool
