Western Cape provincial museum services project : "Born to carry the
burden"-Slave history in the Western Cape
Slavery is present in the history of most civilizations - Greece, Egypt,
Europe, the Americas - and in our own continent of Africa. In broad terms,
it is a universal phenomenon.
In Africa, slavery was justifed on the basis of racial superiority.
Cultural imperialism and spiritual denigration reduced human life to the
level of merchandise - products of economic exchange. The growth of a slave
society during the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries at the Cape is a
significant social and economic chapter in the history of South Africa. The
under-development and marginalisation of indigenous culture has maintained a
conspiracy of ignorance because slave history was always approached with
moral and intellectual caution.
Acknowledging the fact that the fight for remembrance is also a fight for
human rights, the Museum Service launched a travelling exhibition, "Born to
carry the burden", in January 2001.
Travelling programme:
24 January 2001:
Launched at Elsenburg College, Stellenbosch
February 2001:
Bartolomeu Dias Museum, George
