An Invitation to Join the Historical Society of Cape Town

The Historical Society of Cape Town was founded in 1965 by a number of distinguished historians and researchers including Prof. Eric Axelson, one-time professor of history at the University of Cape Town and an authority on the subject of Portuguese explorers who visited the Cape.

The Society exists to promote interest in the historical past of the South Western Cape and of Cape Town in particular.

To reach this goal, it should:

+ attract a large and active membership of interested individuals;

+ hold meetings at which lectures are given;

+ arrange outings to examine artefacts of historic interest;

+ encourage and assist in the collection and preservation, in an appropriate institution, of information and records of historic import;

+ attempt to assess the historic value of artefacts and encourage conservation and /or possible restoration of those articles that might benefit by such treatment;

+ publish and disseminate in appropriate format information it acquires and deems worthwhile;

+ arrange public exhibition of artefacts suitable for such display;

+ preserve and make appropriate use of the restored Josephine Mill that it holds in trust for the benefit of the citizens of Cape Town;

+ maintain the restored Josephine Mill and its environs as its headquarters.

++ Lectures

The Society meets at 8pm on the second Monday of each month at its headquarters, the Josephine Mill. Speakers are drawn from the local community of historians and researchers and regularly include distinguished visiting authorities. Topics cover a wide and varied field although they usually have a Cape flavour. There is a friendly get-together over tea afterwards. The Society repeats these lectures at the Labia Gallery in Muizenberg two days later at 10:30. The April lecture at the Josephine Mill is called "The Margaret Cairns Lecture". It honours her distinguished historical research and service to the Society and covers some aspect of the history of Rondebosch. Admission to all lectures is free to members on production of a membership card. The charge for visitors is R10

++ Excursions
There is a wealth of historical buildings and sites in and around the Mother City. The Society arranges a full and imaginative programme of outings that normally take place on a Saturday afternoon each month and sometimes over whole weekends. Often places are visited that are not generally open to the public and there is always an expert guide in attendance.

++ Publications
CABO is the annual journal of the Society. Authoritative articles focus on aspects of the history of the Western Cape. Members and others are invited to submit articles. A NEWSLETTER is also published 3 times a year. It gives details of forthcoming attractions and reports on the Society's activities and news

++ Conservation
The Society has a proud record of conservation. It first involved itself in the stabilization of the Queen's Blockhouse on the slopes of Table Mountain and then devoted thirteen years to the restoration of the Josephine Mill (see over). It carefully monitors threats to the historical environment and lends support wherever it can.
++ Research

Members are involved in research often leading to publication and are helpful in assisting others with appropriate queries.
