In my research on the GERICKE family I have come across three document
references and I would dearly like to see these original documents.
1. Jackson-Report : Location of Immigrants in the George and Knysna
Division, Cape Town (A47 - '82).
2. The Forest Act of 1913.
3. The Woodcutters Annuities Act of 1939.
Jackson was an officer in the Royal Navy. His report, dated 1882, apparently
contains the names of the working woodcutters at that time.
The Act of 1913 required all woodcutters to register themselves. I am
obviously looking for the that register and not the Act as such.
The Act of 1939 pensioned off the last few remaining woodcutters. Again I am
looking for that register.
The University of Stellenbosch provides a service that I was not previously
aware of. On their Website anybody can search the whole contents of the
library. I tried but could not find anything. A visit to the library, in
spite of the efforts of a very helpful staff, proved that they did not have
what I sought. The Archives in Cape town tried very hard but could not help
me either.
I wonder whether I can appeal to researchers who are more experienced in
this type of search to help me identify libraries, or other sources, where I
can look for the documents I need. Once I know where I can either use the
web facility or write to them.
Any assistance will be appreciated.
Regards,
Erol Gericke.
