Hallo Pat,
I will try and answer your letter in context. Hope it is of some help to
you.

Do you know if he died here is SA? If so the estate would still be in the
Archives unless he died penniless. Have a look on the NAAIRS site.

Believe it or not, but my mother lived in Litchfield and infact one of her
brothers is still living there. I know her parents did move round quite a
bit as her father was in the RAF so was posted all over the place.Small
world.

I myself have never gone on to any of these sites but here is a few sites
that were posted on our Afrikaans List. Hope it helps. If I find any more I
will send them to you.

I must admit that our Department of Interior (where you get copies of BMD
certs) are really pathetic. And ever since our new government has taken
over it has got even worse - you cannot believe it and it has to be seen to
be appreciated. Queues literally 2 blocks long with only one or two
assistants , who take their time and in no hurry at all. You wait months to
get your BMDcertificate/ID doc/drivers licence or whatever you have applied
for, and then you still have errors on the documents too, and have to start
the whole process again. (of course you can always try the black market
which according to my son has a flourishing business at school)
Again on our Afr List there was a letter from someone who went direct to
Pretoria and spoke to a Mrs Bosch - at Tel: (012) 314 8506 who she said was
very helpful. It is a long chance - I don't know if you want to take it.

>do you have a LDS, Morman fam, history

Yes we do. Our nearest, for me, is Centurion, Pretoria or Pietermaritzburg.
There is also one in Johannesburg and Krugersdorp. They have copies of all
the information that is in the Archives but only up to 1950, whereas the
Archives records go up to 25 years prior to 2002.
This is their website:
http://www.familysearch.org/default.asp
If you go on NAAIRS you will find references something like the following:
Depot :TAB
Source :MHG
Volume :0
Ref :446
Description: STRYDOM, SUSARA CATHARINA JOHANNA MAGDALENA. (BORN LINDEQUE).
Starting :19020000
Ending :19020000
Remarks :SURVIVING SPOUSE DANIEL JACOBUS STRYDOM.
Your DEPOT on which province, TAB - Transvaal, VAB - Orange Free State,
NAB - Natal, or KAB - Cape province then plus your SOURCE which will be MHG
for all the provinces except the Cape which is MOOC (that is for your death
notices) and finally your REFERENCE number and JEAR. With that you can look
it up at the LDS, or have them print a copy and send it to you. We have
just ordered about 300 DN's from them.
-------------------------------------------------
The following is extracts from correspondence that I have that might help:
How does one order a Death Notice from the Archives when not able to
personally go and research it?? You would access the data from your
STAIRS disc or from NAAIRS on-line - that gives you the volume and page as
to where that data is retained in the archives. Otherwise, if you do not
have that - then you complete a form, provided by the archives, on which you
list all relevant information - date of birth, date of death, name of the
parties and where possible name of their parents and/or spouse (all of which
is generally listed on the death notice or death certificate The NAAIRS data
shows you where something is filed - be it in the Transvaal, Cape, OFS or
Natal - or for that matter in the central archives in Pretoria. Costs vary
according to the number of pages, but again I think you will find that
information covered or listed on one of the linked sites. You may also
benefit by getting in to the following websites:
http://www.geocities.com/scatterlings/info.htm
http://www.sun.ac.za/gisa/index1.htm
----------------------
One emails and requests details of a surname.
Alternatively one may write to National Archives, Private Bag X 236,
Pretoria 0001 or FAX (012) 323 5287 or Tel: (0122) 323-5300.
I have been dealing with a wonderful person there named Hendi Stump.
--------------------------------
http://www.sun.ac.za/gisa/bronne.htm This would probably be your best
site to start from, you will be amazed at what is available - just access
and print off the data that you need. . It will give you the email
addresses as appropriate and will also, where possible, lead you to the
people who can quote you the R amounts relevant for whatever you are looking
for. This is the GISA site.

Another site to try for SA research. - Conrad Mercer's website.

The Methodist Archives are lodged with the Cory Library, Rhodes University
Grahamstown. The registers you are looking for should be there. If not,
check with the congregations concerned. Unfortunately none of this
material is available online. The Church of LDS was in the process of
microfilming these registers. I am not sure whether this has been
completed. You may want to check with a Family History Library of the LDS
near you.

Have a look on the NAAIRS site. http://www.national.archives.gov.za/
I picked up a reference and then was lucky enough to visit the Archive in
Pretoria where I found some very interesting documents relating to a person
who spent one year in the Transvaal Police
(1909-10). Included were physical description, height, weight, chest, date
of birth, next of kin, where he was posted etc etc.
If you look in the SA Rootsweb archive I think you will find some
correspondence on this subject a year or two ago, someone else found what
they were looking for in a different place.

Well dear I hope this has not confused youeven further but that it is of
some help. Ask if there is anything you don't understand - I was trying to
find as much info as possible for you. If I look hard enough I am sure that
I will find plenty more info, but it is a case of finding where I filed it.
But this is a start, Good Luck.
fond regards
Jean.
