The information you seek is in

"Handbook for Genealogical Research" by RTJ Lombard, R60-00 (about US$5).

I have mislaid my own copy, so I cannot look it up right now.

Best wishes

I am trying to find out how I can get a marriage certificate for my gt.
grandparents. My gt. grandmother, Margaret Ellen Walsh traveled from
Ireland to South Africa as an 18 year old in 1859 on the ship the Maria
Somes. She worked at the Cape of Good Hope as a house servant for a Mrs
van de Bilt. She met my gt.gt. grandfather Robert Martin in South Africa.
He had travelled from Scotland to South Africa in 1959 and lived in
Simonstown. They married, had a daughter Elizabeth in South Africa and
then travelled onto New Zealand in 1865 on the ship Eveline with their 3
year old daughter Elizabeth and another daughter Eveline - born on the ship
and named after it.

I believe that Civil marriage records weren't kept until around 1902 but
that Church records would be the place to search. My grandparents were
both Catholic. Would anyone be able to shed any light on where I can get a
list of Catholic Churches in the Cape of Good Hope area for the period
1860s.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Kind regards
