Has anybody any tips for searching for mention of ships on the archives web site? I know they must be mentioned there somewhere because I have seen references to them , but cannot seem to 'raise' anything about them.

OCEAN. This was an American ship which reached the Cape on April 1, 1802. It had transferred Lt. James Grant from the ship ANNA JOSEPHA somewhere around Tristan Da Cunha. The Anna Josepha was becalmed, and Ocean handed over some bread and water and offered the young Naval Officer a passage to Cape Town. I think Ocean and Anna Josepha were both ordinary ships, not naval.

After a few days recovering from his near-starvation, Lt. Grant was fit enough to take ship on His Majesty's Ship IMPERIEUSE on April 12, 1802. The Imperieuse was a 38 Frigate, captained by Rawley from November 1796 to 1802.

Where would one look for the ships' logs? Lt. Grant was the commander of the Lady Nelson, which had spent three months in Cape and Simon's Bay in 1800. He took charge of the HAWK on his return to England.

Thank you, and go well,
Ivy Trott.
